A much delayed post about Ga Rei Zero since I’ve only started on and caught up the latest episode of this series recently. Anyway, this is a pretty decent show. Not exactly the impressively outstanding sort of series, but nonetheless an interesting series. But of course, it is recommended to read the manga along with watching the series, since well, as the title suggests, Zero is meant to be a prequel to the main verse in the manga. Hence yes, I’ve started reading the manga as well. And frankly, the anime is way better than the manga. For one thing, we get more in-depth character development as the series explores the relationship between Yomi and Kagura rather than just the typical fight demons and save the day plot in the manga.
One thing I want to nitpick on however, is the first episode. Seriously, what the heck, giving us a cast of characters and have them made as though they were the protagonists… …then ended off with the entire team killed off!? The off to episode 2, they just promptly introduced the new (real) cast. I kind of liked the girl on the bike too, especially her bike – really cool bike there. What a bummer.
Nevertheless, once I got over that pointless cliffhanger from episode 1, I’ve to say that the series is quite enjoyable, with nice bit of actions, good animation and art style.
And most importantly the innuendos, the awesome hot yuri scenes, yeah. The aspect of the series which I’m genuinely impressed with, however, is the music. Great BGMs and I’m currently addicted to the OP “Lost Paradise” which incidentally, is sung by Minori Chihara (VA of Nagato Yuuki and Minami Chiaki – for those who didn’t catch that). As side note, I’m also amused by the array of exorcism weapons they have in the series. Yeah, you have the common ones like guns swords, but also very quirky ones including an iron (as in the one used for ironing of clothes, no kidding) used in the manner of a brass knuckle, machine guns packed inside a suitcase (similar to the maid from Black Lagoon), and even a boiler (though we didn’t get to see that one in action).
