While I still find to aru an enjoyable series, I personally feel that it would have been better if they cut down on those long dialogues and explanations. This method works well in the novel (and maybe the manga) but I doubt it’ll be the same for the anime. Sure, the descriptions in episode 1 is acceptable to establish the settings, but to continue with them all throughout can get rather dull and boring, especially when the plot progress itself is rather intriguing. Personally, they should find a way to compliment the mediums. Since novels are meant to be lengthy, they can spam up the descriptions and explanations, but for the anime, it would have been much better to concentrate on the events’ development instead.
Another nitpicking. They need to do something about the protagonist. Currently, in terms of personality, he’s barely the level of a typical mainstream shounen sort of protagonist archetype. That ore ga mamoru attitude is a trademark being done way too much in those shounen series. To aru doesn’t need to join their ranks; the plot and the (side) characters are fascinating, but Touma isn’t.

P.P.S Sphinx shalt be thrown into the black box of chocolate that has only one candy ball… just for the punchline since Himegami said there aren’t any. 🙂
