[Year 2008] A Summary List

EDIT: Added Pic and Remarks.

The year will be coming to an end soon, so here’s little post to do a little summarizing: a list of the series I’ve watched and my ranking for them. I may have missed out one or two series, but oh well.

Patch-Banner-2008

(Not in order of preferences)

[Top Tier] Highly Recommended
Code Geass R2
Eve no Jikan
Kannagi
Kara no Kyoukai
Lucky Star OVA
ToraDora!
To aru majutsu no Index

Remarks: Most of the series in this tier are pretty much self-explanatory. However, I’ll have to say that Kannagi turned out to be the surprise series – I didn’t expect it to turn out this enjoyable. Eve no Jikan needs more love; it’s like the most underrated anime this year. Then again, I guess the lack of comedy or action (or pew pew lazors) turned people off from Eve, since it’s just a rather simple drama of sort (though with a rather complex theme). I’m a big fan of TYPE-Moon so Kara no Kyoukai has got to be in. To aru’s in here simply because I have a soft spot for Fantasy/Magic genre and I like the array of abilities of the characters.

[Mid Tier] Good, worth the watch
Clannad~ After Story
Detroit Metal City
Ga-Rei: Zero
Kurozuka
Kyou no go no nii
Kurenai
Mai-Otome 0: Sifr
Macross Frontier
Minami-ke: Okawari
Nodame Cantabile~ Paris Chapter
Spice & Wolf
Tales of the Abyss
The Tower of Druaga: Aegis of Uruk
Vampire Knight
xxxHOLiC: Kei

Remarks: Clannad is well, Clannad, nothing much to comment on. Detroit Metal City is another one of the surprise series: I like how this series is a satirically humorous take on the Jekyll/Hyde concept. Kurozuka is probably the darker anime this year. Abyss and Druaga are also in this tier because I’m also a sucker for RPG-ish settings (Party forming, questing and such). Ga-Rei: Zero is great series – after looking past its first episode—and with an even better soundtrack. Nodame Paris was quite a disappointment for several reasons: the side characters were not as interesting as those in Season 1 and the pace of the series was rather rushed. Nevertheless, it is still worth the watch.

[Mid Tier] Average, not really worth the watch
Kuroshitsuji
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
Tetsuwan Birdy Decode
Mnemosyne

Remarks: Kuroshitsuji was a series I picked up on a whim: because Jun Fukuyama’s name was on the VA cast. I was basically just curious as to see how he’s going to pull off that gay Shinigami role.

[Bottom Tier] Hall of Shame
Chaos; Head

Remarks: Totally a chaotic mess of crap. Seriously. I didn’t expect any anime to hit this tier, but well, now there’s one.

  1. Well, I don’t agree that Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu is that low, but then I’ve had a thing recently for light-hearted slice of life, so maybe that’s just me. I’m not sure I’d highly recommend it, but it’s definitely worth the watch imo.

I’m almost to the point of putting Tales of the Abyss in my personal Hall of Shame. I’m holding out for now in hopes that by the end things will turn out a little better, but right now the only reason I’m watching it is because gg has timely and quality releases. Oh and because of Tear ❤

Chaos;Head appropriately at the bottom of the pile. I agree with ya there.

I like your picks for top tier too, except I didn’t like To Aru Majutsu no Index. I lost interest around episode 6 or so I think. Toradora and Kannagi are both pretty good, not sure I’d have Kannagi that high, but it’s still pretty enjoyable.

  2. Mnemosyne I disagree with, it was rather good for me. Probably the genre that does not appeal to most people. Spice & Wolf could be higher but again, perception.

    Okawari was just mid-tier.

I do agree with Chaos;Head however lol.

  3. Hmm, I don’t see Natsume Yuujin-chou on the list – easily a top-tier anime if I did my own rankings.

We’re in general agreement otherwise, not counting the ones I haven’t seen (Code Geass, Mnemosyne, etc.). Chaos;Head I haven’t touched, and based on the combined opinions of all who have spoken here I’d be better off not seeing it.

  4. @nazarielle
I like slice-of lifes, but somehow Nogizaka just didn’t catch me. Abyss, Im keeping simply becoz I’m sucker for RPG settings XD

    @Panther
Mnemosyne was becoz I didnt really like the drastic time lapse.

    @Diego
Yeah, I heard lots of good stuff about Natsume; it’s just that I haven’t got round to watching it yet.

  5. hi, i saw you adding anime banzai into the blogroll. do add my new site (The Banzai! Effect) in as well =)
    it is http://www.thebanzaieffect.com

  6. Oh I enjoyed Vampire Knight Very much, tho the first season was boring the second was way better =D
