Episodes Watched : 3
Series Outlook : Positive
Ah yes, gender bender/trap genre. To a small extend, this genre is considered a guilty pleasure of mine mainly because of the hilarity of the mindscrew. Damn, the premise for such series is wrong on many levels but that’s what made them so funny.
Now to Maria+Holic and 3 Episodes in, I’ll have to say that plot wise, it’s still pretty interesting. Yeah, it is a fun series so far and I enjoyed it but that alone is not the determining factor as to why I’ll definitely, no matter how it’ll turn out, keep this series in my watch list.
The real reason is simple: the arts. I love the art style. Trust SHAFT to come up with their rather unorthodox art style, because in the case of SHAFT, it’s no longer just about whether the art quality is “good” or “bad” – it’s unique to say the least and the OP was what really got my attention initially. Frankly, the music itself isn’t particularly impressive, but what I really like about the OP is how it is being directed. The colour contrast, in particular, is splendidly done and the studio made use of minimalism to its maximum advantage. Not to forget the somewhat manga-like, sketchy 2D art of the character. Simple but effective and outstanding in terms of its visual presentation. The animation itself is also superb, loved the way they showed the character’s wildness.
