Prior to watching Index-tan, or to be more specific, before I even knew of the existence of this additional episode… wait, to be really, really precise, about 15 episodes into the series (yes, that’s quite a long while back), ya know what was going on in my mind? To aru Majutsu no Index is very similar to Shakugan no Shana – but in a bad sense. And what is the similarity?
The protagonists’ spotlight was stolen by the … umm non-protagonists: side characters, antagonists, villains and such. Yes, I am not a fan of Shakugan no Shana, I gave it a rating of 6/10 in my review for A-Source.com. I have not read the novel, only a little bit of the manga, so I’m hoping that the popularity of the Shana franchise is because of the novel and manga and that it’s mainly because of adaptation decay that the anime turned out to be an average series. I’ll be frank, the series does start with lots of potential and the plot is interesting. However, the protagonists were boring and too much was spent on the school-life aspect rather than the fantasy elements. However, the series had interesting side characters like that Maid Wilhelmia, Margery Daw, Pheles and several other villains with interesting appearances and abilities.
Same goes for Majutsu. Kamijyo Touma was practically the most typical shounen hero; the ones yelling “kimi ga mamoru! Zettai da!”. Heck, Kurosaki Ichigo had way more personality and more engaging to watch than Touma. And Index is a token loli whose story is not even the centre of the series despite having her name in the title. The side cast on the other hand, were simply way more fascinating with Misaka “biri-biri” whom many fans like, my personal favorite characters of the series oddball Himegami Aisa, the Accelerator, Styls and more.
That ends another rant.
*off to watch more Haruhi-chan*
