Yeah, I know about toning things down for TV, but seriously, this is pathetic. I would have thought that Studio DEEN used the same technique in Higurashi for Umineko: the use of lighting effects and camera angles to create gore-discretion shots, such as shadows to prevent seeing the actual scene clearly (like what they’ve done in Higurashi, might I emphasis). To think that they resort to such cheap method – mosaic of all things!
Seriously I’m already quite tolerant about censorship bars in hentai.
So… my Impression so far:
The Good: I like the way they did this semi-4th wall. It is certain that magic exists in this realm (the tea-house dimension, as I put it). The only thing is the conjecture for whether it exists or not in the ‘game’ they’re involved in. All in all, I found the style to be much more engaging that Higurashi where the ‘outside realm’ is introduced right from the beginning, unlike Higurashi, where Hanyu was shown only in season 2.
The Bad: Umineko had plenty of potential to be epic. Firstly, Studio DEEN, having done Higurashi, is supposed to be more experienced in this type of show. Yet Umineko lacked the impact that they managed to achieve (and should still be able to) in Higurashi. Secondly, the directing is disappointing. It had good bgms. It had good costume designs. both of which would give legitimate excuse to pull off dramatic scenes of grandeur in the likeness of say, Death Note. In short, good scripting, good concept, but not so good directing. Finally, while I do like the art style, they should do something about its quality.
