April 2010 – New Series

4 Comments

Overview: On the whole, nothing really outstanding so far, but enough amount of sufficiently interesting new shows to pick up.

1. Angel Beats
In terms of advertising, this one is very misleading. Sure, it involves KEY staffers in the project, but really, this is very different from any other KEY productions. Of the series itself: 1) as long as they rebel (eg don’t behave like NPCs), they don’t get erased. 2) the ‘angel’ doesn’t actively hunt them down. 3) they can’t die.Sounds more exciting that Haibane Ranmei and a much better deal than GANTZ.
Priority on watch-list: medium

2. Ichiban ushiro no daimaou
Looks like generic harem series. Sigh…
Priority on watch-list: low

3. Arakawa under the Bridge
Obligatory does of quirky SHAFT humor. And oh, Maaya Sakamoto in her Ryougi Shiki Voice. I’d that voice. Hard.
Priority on watch-list: medium

4. Kaichou wa maid-san
I got into the show with the wrong mindset. I do not think that her autocratic rule was wrong. I’m a guy, but honestly, the guys in her class are bunch of pathetic half-wits. Yeah, the message of the show is about her slowly learning to open up and understand others more, however, it is kind of pointless when Usui is the only sensible guy there. I would have sympathised more if the guys are shown as being actually intending to bridge and improve their understanding with each other, and that it is mainly due to several black sheep ruining the party. Unfortunately, that’s not the case and the background characters are the ones sort of making the show less enjoyable than it should have been. That said, I do find this series reasonably fun to watch. Also, it’s got a tsun tsun maido-san, thereby rendering my rant moot (sort of). That in turns brings up another thing: although it seems to be going for multiple demographic appeal, at the rate it’s going (especially, considering episode 3), there may just be more fanboys than fangirls following this show. Just sayin’.
Priority on watch-list: medium

5. K-ON! Season 2
No, I did not forget to include an additional exclamation mark; I simply consider it a ridiculous title so I’ll just stick to typing it as kei-on one exclamation mark Season 2. I’m convinced that the point of this show is to have as little to do as possible with music. And the girls are wondering why they don’t get any new members. Also, they sold the frickin’ vintage guitar!? What the heck sort of musicians are they!? And they used the money buy something that has nothing to do with music. At all. Still, as a slice-of-life series, it’s fun to watch lol.

    Seems like they never change XD

  2. The ones you put on your list are the ones i watch…well there is also Bgata H kei and others like giant killings.
    but i guess the ones you put are the priority except ichiban;.

  3. I had the same impression with K-on season 2 episode 1…I even cringed the fact that they bought a turtle and an aquarium. They should have bought at least 1 music related fancy instrument (or whatever they call it) but it’s still funny 🙂

  4. @Ryan
    lol

    @Fabrice
    Haha I guess I’ll need to do another post; there are some others shows I haven’t include.

    @Nogizaka
    The only thing related to music are the product placements :/
