[ July] New Series Impressions

New month, new season, new shows to start on. Not a bad line-up to start with, look pretty promising.

1. Black Lagoon OVA
2. Kurenai OVA
3. The Wolf & her 7 Friends
4. Seikimatsu Occult Academy
5. Amagami SS

Black Lagoon OVA – Roberta’s Blood Trail

Based on the El Baile de la Muerte arc that spans 33 chapters of the manga and packed into the length of mere 5 OVA, looks like this one’s going to be very fast paced. First episode in and they’ve already cut out quite a bit of conversations and went right to the bar fight. And a pretty good fight it was, with plenty of gun akimbo. Overall however, while the animation quality is higher than the series, it isn’t that much higher, especially when considering that this is an OVA release. Hopefully, it’s only because this just the first one and that they’re saving the budget for the major action sequences.
Priority on Watchlist: High. (Well, then again, it’s not like this is a weekly release so…)

Kurenai OVA

I don’t understand why Brain-Base decides to change the art style. I heard it’s to make it more similar to the manga but one of the charms of the TV series is because of its rather unconventional character designs. Sure, it may not be ‘moe’ but that doesn’t mean that the art isn’t pretty, quite the reverse, in fact. In the series, the art helps to make Murasaki adorable without falling into the ‘generic moeblob’ category. Thus, the change in art style kind of made the OVA loose it’s uniqueness and slides it more towards the typical school life series. Thankfully, the story is still entertaining. I really liked the series and so far, Brain-Base’s works does not disappoint so I’m hoping for the best – story line wise, at least.
Priority on Watchlist: High

The Wolf & her 7 Friends

Here it comes, the feeling of JC Staff déjà vu. Seeing as how Parody series is the norm, I’m not going to try and give overly high expectation. Or rather, my expectation of Parody series is already set at around Hayate no Gotoku and Gintama, so as long as this series is better than say, Seitokai Ichizon, I’m fine with it. Also, I don’t like the narrator; I don’t like Kuroko’s voice, though I have to admit that at the very least, that voice is more suitable for this show (what with all the Fairy Tale parody) than Railgun.
Priority on Watchlist: Medium

Seikimatsu Occult Academy

They sent back the Terminator in order to fight against aliens, espers, ghosts and demons! … … is what I think (hope), based on the first episode. While the characters don’t seem exactly appealing, the setting appears rather promising. Especially the animation in the opening theme. Hope it turns out good.
Priority on Watchlist: Medium

Amagami SS

On one hand, the setting is a little too cliché to my liking. On the other hand, it is kind of unfair to say it’s cliché because the source the anime is based on has been around for quite a while, probably around the time when said School Life tropes haven’t become cliché (citation needed). Still, I can’t bear to drop it because it’s got good art quality and great character design.
Priority on Watchlist: Medium
