It’s been barely a year and the cast is back! Right of the bat, the episode begins with the usual medium awareness dialogues that fans are already familiar with… but wait! What’s that, a white background? Those lazy animators, give us back our signature Still Image of the Yorozuya dammit!
Time is a funny thing. Especially when it comes to experiencing the occurrence of it as one perceives. What happens when an individual ‘wakes up’ only to realize that everything around him has changed much more than supposed to? Gintama opens its first episode with poor Shinpachi, who experienced what seemed like a Rip van Winkle effect going on returns to the Yorozuya to find that the gang are all no longer as he knew. As though he was like Fry from Futurama who has stepped into cryogenic freezing, Shinpachi steps into the new season as the only character who is ‘still the same’. To his astonishment, everyone he knew seems to have drastically changed. This being Gintama can only mean one thing: hilarious and crazy hijinks ensue!
Initially, Shinpachi thinks that it’s just Gintoki attempting to troll him (as per usual) as he turned up in a Dragon Ball get-up, spouting a whole bunch of action shounen motives and a drastic image change. That’s when Kagura too returns from her journey, no longer a loli, but has grown into a hot bishoujo. To twist the screw further into Shinpachi’s mind, he rushed off in disbelief to discover that the other characters such as Sadaharu, Otose, Tama and Catherine have all also supposedly evolved in the span of two years in-verse time (They have all evolved into what seems like resemblances of minor characters from Cromartie High School).
Worse, to his horror, he went back home only to discover that Otae is now married with Kondou and are spending time being sickeningly sweet. Personally, I’d say that Otae-chan’s scene would have been even funnier if after the ‘time lapse’, her cooking actually became good and prepared a feast – just to make Shinpachi crap more brix.
Now, alone and in despair, Shinpachi encounters Kyuubei who, shockingly have transformed into a proper lady and no longer dressing up like a guy. Unfortunately, just when he thought that he could finally catch a break, the cosmic forces sweeps back full to remind Shinpachi of his status as the butt monkey. Turns out Kyuubei has supposedly ‘undergone a certain surgery’. That’s right, Kyuubei has upgraded her status from a reverse trap to an actual trap. And so, Shinpachi falls further in despair.
But wait, it’s not over yet, as Katsura turns up to declare his challenge to Trap-bei: he has now gotten into cross-dressing! The episode thus ended on a cliff-hanger with the confrontation between Trapbei and Trapzura. So, how will things proceed from here? Well, you’ll just have to STAY TUNE FOR THE NEXT EXCITING EPISODE OF GINTAMA NEO !
[Impression] I have to say, I’m glas that even after 200+ episodes (or 300+ chapters), Gintama is still going strong and consistently coming up with excellent materials. What’s more even the anime adaptation is fantastic. Not only is it faithful to the source materials, it also expanded on some of the scenes for good. That’s not easy. This is what it means to do a parody. No, this is how you do comedy!
First episode of this new season in and they’re not wasting time to throw in the gags. It’s ridiculous, it’s crazy and it’s downright hilarious. Great new theme songs as well (man, I miss those facial expressions in the OP). Yeap, it’s Gintama alright. I’m definitely following this on a weekly basis. Definitely THE show of the year.
