Recently got around to playing Recettear. Overall, it certainly was an enjoyable game and I don’t think this game needs much introduction. Or rather, for those unacquainted and are interested, here’s the link to TvTropes.
A quick browse through blogs and forums also showed favourable comments towards the game. So instead of echoing the same praises, I’ll instead comment on what I think are the flaws and how it could have been improved.
1) In general, once you get to Endless Mode, the game became less “capitalism, ho!” and more like the typical RPG. Once you clear the Story Mode, you’re actually just making profits after profits so it became rather meaningless after a while – at least in terms of the whole being a merchant setting. Sure, there is a bunch of things to do in the dungeons, but as far setting up a shop go, you just get richer. And richer. But nothing much to REALLY spend it on.
2) The adventurers seem like a group of severely underpaid labourers. For reference, Recette as a lv 40 Merchant has a net worth of about 10m (about 4m in pix and 6m in assets). Yet I only have to pay like less than 5k for an adventurer of that level. And so the income gap just keeps widening. Capitalism indeed. Anyway, I think that the hire costs should have been higher.
3) Also, I think it may have been more interesting if in Endless Mode, now that you have paid off your debt, you now have to pay weekly wages to Tear. Because the way it is right now, she’s basically working for you for free. And most importantly, I have so much cash I don’t even know what to spend it on. Frankly, the only ‘loss’ I’m making is from buying items such as food for the adventurers when dungeon crawling, which is easily earned back from selling higher tier weapons.
Yes, I’m aware that there is a Survival Mode but what I want is a more balanced gameplay between adventuring and merchant-ing.
