Ah Touhou, possibly one of the few titles where the SFW doujins are actually in higher demand, which makes sense considering the nature of the verse. Anyway, touhou needs no introduction so let’s cut the chatter: there are easily thousands of doujins floating out there on the internet. Even if one is to download Gaku’s entire batch torrent*, it’ll still be quite a feat to go through them. So hopefully, this little post can help in highlighting several of the more interesting ones as a starting point.
#1 – Touhou Battle Royale – Acid Club East
Vol 1- 6 (complete)
Action, Drama, Serious
There can only be one.
Some sort of a plot device turns up and the only resolution is that the touhous must fight each other to the death. Who cares if the underlying story is ridiculous? The purpose is seeing various face-offs and well, the fights were certainly fantastic. There are even some surprising match-ups – like Remilia Scarlet fighting against Cirno of all characters. Naturally, you can’t have a battle royale without Suika brawling to her heart’s content with none other than Kazami Yuuka. Sadly, there’s no Yuugi in this. Also worth noting is that Marisa and Reimu had little scenes in this, making this series a great opportunity for the other touhou characters to get their limelight.
With that said however, the art style is the doujin’s main weakness. Some of the scenes weren’t quite as good, or rather lost significant impact, due to some rather awkward and stiff postures and general composition. Nevertheless, this doujin is a fun read, albeit too short; would be great if there is some sort of a remake with improved art quality and the inclusion of a larger cast.
#2 – Miko Miko Suika – Haniwa’s Store
10 releases, on-going
The overarching plot is centred on Reimu being in perpetual poverty, Suika being bored and one thing led to another, ended up becoming a miko at the Hakurei shrine. Suika turned out to be better at the job than Reimu (much to her chagrin). Also, the shrine keeps getting destroyed due to various shenanigans pulled by the other characters.
Now this series is without a doubt, my favourite touhou doujin. Featuring wacky hijinks, plenty of gags and touhou characters being quirky as ever, this is the type of touhou doujin that I like. Great story style, great art and plenty of hilarious moments. Highly recommended, especially if in need of some good laughs. One of the story even involved Nitori modifying the Hakurei shrine into a flying robot… thingy. And oh, last but not least, Suika is just so adorable.
#3 – Gensou Liar – Pojiyuusu
2 releases, on-going
If it exist on the internet, then there is a Touhou of it. Thus, here we have Gensokyou’s version of Liar Game. The setting is the same as the manga it’s based on: the characters each have a suitcase of money and later on formed teams to compete against other teams. But of course, since this is touhou – you know what with all the magic and what not – this series is more Jojo’s Bizzare Adventures than Liar Game. Sadly, only 2 releases are available so this is going to take quite a while. Based on the current available releases though, it appears to be worth looking forward to. On another note, it’s weird to see Hong Meiling being frighteningly competent seeing as how I’ve gotten used to the comedic situations involving her getting bullied. It’s a nice touch alright.
#4 – A Better Tomorrow – DEMOUR402
1 release, complete
Action, Comedy, Mecha
High jinks between Mokou and Kaguya leads to the touhous establishing a paintball fight. Naturally, in Gensokyou, shooting “paint capsules at each other” means something along the line of Yukari giving out tons and tons of famous guns, bombs, swords and bunch of other weapons to the participating characters. Sure, the ruling is that the damage is kept at danmaku level, but I don’t see how that knowledge will make the idea of Remilia Scarlet wielding Alucard’s Jackal any less intimidating. The author is probably also a military or history otaku (or both), what with all the various historical weapons and even references to bits of historical trivia, such as Aya’s attempt to use Momiji as a dog bomb backfiring on her.
This, along with the Miko Miko Suika series are my preferred type of Touhou doujin: comedic with a bunch of wacky action scenes in between.
#5 – Please Remilia – Makegumi Club
5 releases, status unknown
We’re used to seeing Hong Meiling constantly being picked on and Reimu being poor. Now, time to drag another character to the bottom of the barrel. In this series, the previously feared and respected Remilia Scarlet is losing her Charisma, where she is seen as a pushover and gets into a whole bunch of troubles, such as being threatened by Patchouli, being forced to give up ownership of the SDM, bossed around by Flandre, get rolled into a lawsuit, losing her status as the Head of SDM and so on.
Another favorite of mine.
